SPIRITUAL NOT RELIGIOUS - SBNR
When people say that they are; "Spiritual But Not Religious" [SBNR], they
are affirming that there is no absolute truth! It is an attack upon "unity". It
is an attack upon "community"! Each person seeking to be their own
religious authority. This concept is not new.
Each individual is "right in their own eyes" (Judges 19:1). This is a quote
from Judges when the Israelites went in every direction of faith and
morals which brought great calamities upon Israel.
Here is another quote from the Old Testament;
Proverbs 30:12 There are those who are pure in their own eyes but are
not cleansed of their filth.
We have all heard the statement; "The oldest profession".
This is the latest repackaging of one of one of the oldest theological errors! It is so 'trendy'
right now that it even has its own an acronym "SBNR".
For centuries since the time of the Old Testament, and before, people have been railing
against God and His Commands. They want to make their own rules and reject obedience
1 Samuel 15:22 "But Samuel said: "Does the LORD so delight in holocausts and sacrifices
as in obedience to the command of the LORD? Obedience is better than sacrifice, and
submission than the fat of rams. 23 For a sin like divination is rebellion, and presumption is
the crime of idolatry. Because you have rejected the command of the LORD, he, too, has
rejected you as ruler.""
St. Paul admonishes believers in The New Testament. He stressed the same idea; Romans
1:5 "Through him we have received the grace of apostleship, to bring about the obedience
of faith, for the sake of his name, among all the Gentiles,"
Some things never change.
People today, still want to make up their own rules.
So, they 'wear this badge' "I AM SPIRITUAL BUT NOT RELIGIOUS"
Basically, I feel, they are saying they are good, non-judgmental beings - while everyone
'religious' is somehow 'bad'!
I see the issue the other way around. The one who makes up their own religion is 'part of
the problem' not part of the solution!
If someone says they can make up their own religion while they walk down the street then
what is to stop someone from saying; killing a baby is OK!
Or rape is OK!
Or lying and stealing is OK!
Or worse yet, what is there in life that can give us hope?
If everyone is right and no one is wrong then how can anyone tell right from wrong?
In a world where there is no absolute truth, how can one experience truth?
As Pilate said; "What is truth?". [John 18:38]
The only people with truth would be the bullies of the world! Those with the most power
would dictate what is right and what is wrong.
It is the same old problem, in a different package!
People refuse to follow God! However that sounds bad, so they tell everyone they are
"spiritual"... but "not religious"!
All the while I type these words I understand some people do not see the problem with this
choice. So I am not saying they are all prideful or malicious, however that doesn't change
the fact that they are part of the problem.
God knew of this problem long before today! As I mentioned earlier, He speaks of this in the
Old Testament of mankind refusing to follow Him.
"It is not you they reject, they are rejecting me as their king." 1 Samuel 8:7
I have found, in the past, when discussing "organized religion" with some people, that they
reject God, but they refuse to admit to this. Instead they claim that they have no problem
with God, rather, their problem is with "organized religion".
Each time this happens I feel God speaking to my heart saying; "They are rejecting Me".
I personally think the people complaining, suppose that they are legitimizing their complaints
by saying they have a problem with "organized religion". If they were to say their problem is
with God then they would find themselves on tenuous ground, as no thoughtful person
would argue with God.
The fact still remains that God knows their heart. So, who are they fooling?
Isaiah 5:20 Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and
light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!5:21 Woe to those who are
wise in their own eyes, and shrewd in their own sight!
2 Timothy 3:12 In fact, all who want to live religiously in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. 13
But wicked people and charlatans will go from bad to worse, deceivers and deceived. 14
But you, remain faithful to what you have learned and believed, because you know from
whom you learned it, 15 and that from infancy you have known (the) sacred scriptures,
which are capable of giving you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
WHY THEN WERE YOU NOT AFRAID TO SPEAK AGAINST
MY SERVANT MOSES?
